Victorian High Country

High Country

Tracks, huts & adventures in Victoria’s High Country

Long before we set off on our lap of Australia, Victoria’s High Country was one of our favourite places to get away.

We’ve spent years exploring it in our 4WDs — from steep mountain tracks and river crossings to historic huts, remote camps, small towns and some seriously good views.

We’ve covered plenty of country up here, but there’s always another track or somewhere new to explore.

If we had to pick one track in the Victorian High Country, this would be it. King Billy Track is our favourite — proper High Country 4WDing surrounded by some incredible mountain country.

It’s exactly the sort of trip we enjoy: getting the 4WDs out, heading into the mountains and spending the day exploring the tracks, huts and country along the way.

Lake Cobbler

Camping, 4WDing & mountain country

Lake Cobbler has been one of our High Country destinations for camping and exploring the surrounding tracks. It’s a great part of the High Country to base yourself, get the 4WDs out and spend some time away from everything.

Mt Stirling & Mt Buller

Exploring the mountains

We’ve spent time exploring around Mt Stirling and Mt Buller, where outside the ski season the area becomes a completely different place filled with tracks, huts and huge views across the surrounding ranges.

Craig’s Hut

A High Country icon

Craig’s Hut is one of those High Country places that’s always worth visiting. Sitting above the surrounding mountains near Mt Stirling, it’s an iconic stop with some seriously good views.

Bluff Hut

High Country history

Historic huts are a big part of exploring the Victorian High Country, and Bluff Hut is one we’ve visited along the way. The hut, mountain country and tracks around it are exactly what we enjoy about travelling through this part of Victoria.

Woods Point

Tracks, history & a tiny mountain town

We’ve explored around Woods Point, one of those small Victorian mountain towns where the drive in is as much a part of the trip as the destination. It’s surrounded by bush, old mining history and plenty of country to explore by 4WD.

Rubicon

Bush tracks & 4WD country

We’ve spent time exploring the Rubicon area, another great part of Victoria for getting off the main roads and into the bush. It’s the kind of country that keeps bringing us back to the High Country.

Mt Buffalo

Mountains, lookouts & alpine scenery

Mt Buffalo offers a different side of the High Country, with massive granite formations, mountain roads, walking tracks and views across north-east Victoria. It’s another part of the region we’ve enjoyed exploring over the years.

Beechworth

History in North East Victoria

We’ve visited Beechworth while travelling through Victoria’s north-east. It’s a great historic town and a good contrast to the remote tracks and camps that make up so much of our High Country trips.

Myrtleford

At the foot of the High Country

Myrtleford is another place we’ve spent time around while exploring north-east Victoria and the surrounding High Country, sitting amongst the mountains and giving access to plenty more places to explore.

How We Explore the High Country

For us, the High Country has always been about the 4WDing as much as the destination. We usually head out in a small convoy, tackle the tracks, stop at huts and lookouts along the way and find somewhere to camp when the day is done.

We’ve explored the area in all three of our 4WDs over the years — our GQ Patrol, RG Colorado and Y62 Patrol — and there’s still plenty more of it we want to see.
