Beechworth and Stanley is a great area for an easy 4WD weekend in North East Victoria. Most people know Beechworth for its history and old buildings, but head just out of town towards Stanley and there's plenty of bush to explore by 4WD. We've spent time exploring the tracks around the area and it's a good option when we're after a more relaxed day behind the wheel rather than tackling the harder tracks you'll find deeper in the Victorian High Country.
Exploring Around Stanley
Stanley is only a short drive from Beechworth, but once you head out into the surrounding forest you're quickly away from town and into the bush.
There's a good network of forest tracks around the area, making it easy to put together a day of exploring without necessarily having one particular track as the destination.
That's one of the things we enjoy about Stanley.
You can head out, explore different tracks, stop along the way and make a full day of it without needing to chase difficult obstacles.
The 4WDing
The four-wheel driving around Stanley is generally pretty easy.
There's a mix of forest tracks, some ruts, muddy sections and the occasional rocky bit, but overall we'd rate it as an easy 4WD destination.
You don't need to be chasing massive climbs or difficult recoveries to have a good day out here.
Like anywhere, the weather can change things.
After rain, some sections can become muddy and slippery and ruts can hold plenty of water. A track that's an easy cruise in the dry can become a little more interesting when it's wet.
But compared with some of the harder Victorian High Country trips we've done, Stanley is definitely at the easier end of the scale.
A Great Family 4WD Trip
This is a really good area for a family 4WD trip.
The tracks are generally easy enough that the day isn't spent constantly worrying about the next obstacle, but you're still out in the bush exploring in the 4WD.
It's also the sort of place that's good for anyone starting out with four-wheel driving.
You can get off the bitumen, explore some proper bush tracks and get a feel for the vehicle without deliberately throwing yourself at difficult terrain.
Beechworth
Having Beechworth right nearby is another big advantage.
There's plenty to see around town, heaps of history and plenty of places to grab something to eat.
It means the whole weekend doesn't need to revolve around four-wheel driving either.
We can spend part of the day exploring the tracks around Stanley and then head back into Beechworth for a look around, which works well when we're travelling with the kids.
More Than Just the Tracks
North East Victoria is one of those areas where you could easily turn a simple weekend into a much bigger trip.
Beechworth and Stanley are surrounded by plenty of other places worth exploring, and you're not far from the Victorian High Country if you want to extend the trip and find some more challenging four-wheel driving.
For us, Beechworth and Stanley works well as the easier part of a bigger North East Victoria adventure.
What we'd take
Even though we'd rate the tracks as easy, we still carry our normal recovery and touring gear.
That includes rated recovery points and recovery gear, recovery boards, tyre deflators, compressor, tyre repair kit, shovel, first aid kit, tools and UHF.
Easy tracks can still catch you out, particularly after rain, so we'd rather have the gear with us and not need it.
Things to know before you go
Check current track access and conditions before heading out.
Seasonal and temporary closures can apply throughout Victoria's forests, and storms, fallen trees, fire or track damage can also affect access.
Weather is worth keeping an eye on too.
If there's been plenty of rain, expect more mud, water-filled ruts and slippery sections than you'd find during a dry weekend.
Our verdict
Beechworth and Stanley is a great option when we're after an easy 4WD trip without having to tackle anything too serious.
There's plenty of bush to explore, the tracks are generally straightforward and having Beechworth nearby gives you heaps to do away from the 4WD as well.
It might not have the big climbs and harder tracks of the Victorian High Country, but that's not what we'd come here looking for.
It's an easy, enjoyable day out in the 4WD and a great area to make a weekend of.
