Bluff Hut is another great destination to work into a Victorian High Country 4WD trip. We've visited Bluff Hut while exploring the area, and like a lot of the High Country, it's not just about reaching the hut. The tracks, mountain scenery and stops along the way are what make the whole trip worthwhile. It's exactly the sort of four-wheel driving we enjoy — heading into the mountains with a destination in mind but making the drive there part of the experience.
Getting to Bluff Hut
There are different ways to reach Bluff Hut, so the difficulty of the trip depends heavily on the route you choose and the conditions at the time.
That's worth keeping in mind when planning any High Country trip.
Following someone's GPS route doesn't necessarily mean you'll experience the same conditions they did. Tracks change, weather changes and a section that's straightforward in the dry can become considerably more challenging after rain.
For us, that's part of the appeal of exploring the High Country.
Bluff Hut
Bluff Hut sits in a brilliant High Country location and is well worth stopping to have a proper look around.
Like many of the huts scattered throughout the Victorian mountains, it's more than just somewhere to pull up for a photo.
These huts are part of the history of the High Country and give you another reason to get out of the 4WD and spend some time exploring.
The open country around Bluff Hut is also a nice change after spending hours driving through thick bush.
The 4WDing
We'd rate the overall difficulty around Bluff Hut as moderate, although that can vary significantly depending on how you build your route.
There are steep climbs and descents, rocky sections and plenty of typical High Country terrain throughout the surrounding area.
Some sections require a bit more thought about wheel placement and picking a good line, but that's exactly what we enjoy.
It's proper four-wheel driving without the whole trip needing to become a competition to find the hardest obstacle.
High Country Scenery
The scenery is a massive part of why we enjoy this area.
As you climb higher, the bush starts opening up and you get some great views across the surrounding mountains.
It's one of the things that separates High Country four-wheel driving from a lot of other places we've explored.
You can spend hours concentrating on the track, come around a corner or reach the top of a climb and suddenly have a massive view across the ranges.
Those are usually the spots where we end up stopping for longer than planned.
Make It Part of a Bigger Trip
We wouldn't necessarily treat Bluff Hut as a drive-in, drive-out destination.
It's much better incorporated into a bigger High Country trip.
There are plenty of other huts, tracks, camps and destinations throughout the surrounding mountains, so Bluff Hut works well as one stop along the way.
That's generally how we like exploring the High Country anyway.
Rather than picking one destination and driving straight there, we'll link several places together and make a full day or multi-day trip out of it.
Travelling With the Family
The kids have been coming along on our 4WD trips for years, and places like Bluff Hut are a good example of why High Country trips work so well for us as a family.
There's the four-wheel driving, but there's also plenty to get out and explore along the way.
Old huts, rivers, mountain views and bush camps break up the time spent in the vehicle and give everyone something different to see.
What we'd take
For a trip through this part of the High Country, we carry our usual recovery and touring gear.
That includes rated recovery points and recovery gear, recovery boards, tyre deflators, compressor, tyre repair kit, shovel, first aid kit, tools and UHF.
We also prefer travelling the more remote High Country tracks with other 4WDs.
Our trips are usually done in a convoy, and having another vehicle around makes a big difference if something goes wrong or somebody needs a recovery.
Things to know before you go
Always check current track access and conditions before heading towards Bluff Hut.
Seasonal closures affect many Victorian High Country tracks, while storms, fires, fallen trees and track damage can result in additional temporary closures.
Weather can also change the difficulty significantly.
A trip we've rated as moderate could be easier in good dry conditions or considerably harder after heavy rain.
Plan for the conditions you're actually heading into rather than relying entirely on someone else's previous experience.
Our verdict
Bluff Hut is another one of those places that makes the Victorian High Country such a good 4WD destination.
The hut itself is worth visiting, but for us it's the combination of the tracks, mountain scenery and the journey getting there that makes the trip.
We'd happily include Bluff Hut again as part of another High Country run, especially with so many different tracks and destinations throughout the surrounding mountains still left to explore.
