Kincrome Tools – Our Touring Tool Drawer
Tools are something we don't skimp on when we're travelling.
Our Y62 has a dedicated tool drawer containing seven different Kincrome kits, all laid out so we can open the drawer and get straight to whatever we need.
Rather than carrying one big tool box and digging through it every time something needs tightening or repairing, we've built the drawer around individual Kincrome sets. We've got sockets, Torx bits, Allen keys, ratchet spanners, ratchets and socket sets, screwdrivers and plenty more.
It's basically our mobile workshop — just organised into one drawer.
Seven Kincrome Kits in One Drawer
One of the best things about our setup isn't necessarily how many tools we carry, but how they're stored.
We've taken seven separate Kincrome kits and arranged them inside the drawer so everything has its place and is immediately accessible.
Open the drawer and we can see what we need.
There's no unpacking boxes, digging through bags or pulling half the back of the Patrol apart looking for a particular socket.
When you're travelling full-time, that makes a massive difference.
What's In Our Setup?
We've built the collection up to cover most of the jobs we're likely to tackle ourselves while travelling.
Our Kincrome setup includes:
- Socket sets
- Ratchets and sockets
- Ratchet spanners
- Torx bits
- Allen key sets
- Screwdrivers
- Assorted bits and hand tools
- Plus plenty more
Combined with the other tools and Milwaukee gear we carry, it gives us a pretty capable setup for repairs and maintenance on the road.
Why Carry So Many Tools?
We're not just driving around town in the Y62.
It's our full-time tow vehicle while travelling Australia, and we're regularly heading through remote areas, along corrugated roads and onto 4WD tracks.
The Patrol itself also has plenty fitted to it — drawers, fridge, electrical systems, roof rack, awning, recovery gear, compressor and other accessories — and then we've got the caravan behind us as well.
There's a lot of equipment that can potentially need adjusting or repairing.
You can't carry a spare for absolutely everything, but having the right tools gives us a much better chance of fixing something ourselves.
Corrugations Will Find Anything That's Loose
If you spend enough time driving corrugated roads, eventually you'll find something that needs tightening.
We've travelled roads like the Oodnadatta Track and plenty of other rough and corrugated sections during our travels, so our tools aren't just sitting in a drawer looking pretty.
Whether it's something on the Patrol, caravan or one of our accessories, having a proper selection of sockets, spanners, bits and drivers means we can usually deal with the smaller problems ourselves.
Kincrome Quality
We've used Kincrome gear for years and have always been happy with it.
When we're carrying tools specifically because we may need to rely on them somewhere remote, we don't want a drawer full of cheap gear that's going to let us down when we actually put some pressure on it.
The Kincrome kits have been reliable, they're well organised and the range has allowed us to put together a tool setup that suits the way we travel.
Easy Access Was Important
Weight and storage space matter in any touring setup, so we wanted our tools packed efficiently.
Using the drawer means we're making use of space that was already available while keeping a large range of tools organised.
And because the individual kits are laid out in the drawer, we're not carrying a massive toolbox that needs to be removed from the vehicle every time we want something.
Open drawer. Grab tool. Do the job. Put it back.
Simple.
Not Just for the Patrol
Our Kincrome gear gets used for a lot more than vehicle repairs.
Living in a caravan full-time means there's always something that needs adjusting, tightening, modifying or fixing.
The same drawer gets used for jobs on the Y62, caravan, 12V setup, camping equipment and accessories.
It's one of the most practical parts of our touring setup.
Would We Recommend Kincrome?
Absolutely.
We've invested in seven different Kincrome kits because we use the gear and trust it.
For us, the combination of quality tools and the way we've integrated the individual sets into our drawer system works extremely well. Everything is organised, easy to access and permanently in the Patrol whenever we need it.
You don't necessarily need to carry as many tools as we do, but if you're building a vehicle for remote or long-term touring, we'd definitely recommend putting together a proper tool kit rather than relying on a handful of basic tools.
When something goes wrong hundreds of kilometres from home, having the right tool sitting in the drawer can make all the difference.
