Places we’ve stayed that the whole family actually enjoyed
Travelling Australia with kids changes what makes a great place to stay.
A flash camp kitchen is nice, but sometimes all it takes is a good playground, some animals wandering around camp, somewhere to ride a scooter or other kids to disappear with for the afternoon.
These are the caravan parks, station stays and campgrounds that have genuinely stood out to us as a family.
Places The Kids Loved
The stays that gave us more than somewhere to park the caravan.
Hazelvale Station Campgrounds
We spent four nights at Hazelvale Station Campgrounds while travelling through western New South Wales. It’s a simple station campground rather than a big holiday park, but that was part of what made it such a good family stop for us.
Why The Kids Loved It
The goats and dogs around the property were a massive hit with the kids and gave them plenty to do around camp.
What We Liked
Quiet camping, welcoming hosts and excellent showers. At $25 per night when we stayed, we thought it was great value.

Station StayWillow Springs Station
We spent four nights at Willow Springs Station while exploring the Flinders Ranges and used it as our base for Skytrek and exploring the surrounding area. It’s a huge working sheep station and gave us exactly the sort of stay we enjoy — plenty of space, great facilities and something different for the kids.
Why The Kids Loved It
The animals were a big part of the stay. The kids enjoyed feeding the lizards, checking out the chickens and seeing the sheep around the property.
What We Liked
Excellent facilities, plenty of space and a great location for exploring the Flinders Ranges and taking on Skytrek.

What We Look For
We’re travelling full-time with two kids, so what makes a good campground for us isn’t necessarily the same as what makes one good for everyone.
We don’t need a resort every night. Some of the places the kids have enjoyed most have been simple stays with animals, other kids around or just plenty of room to get outside.
Something For The Kids
Playgrounds, pools, animals, room to ride around or simply something that gets them out of the caravan.
Good Facilities
Clean showers, toilets, laundry and practical facilities make life on the road much easier.
Room To Enjoy It
We’d rather have some room around the caravan than feel packed into a site.
Good Value
When you’re travelling full-time and staying multiple nights, good value makes a big difference.
Our G’day Parks Membership
Once we started travelling full-time, we decided to take out a two-year G’day Parks membership.
It paid for itself ridiculously quickly — the saving on our very first eligible stay covered the entire cost of the two-year membership. That meant every eligible saving we received after that was effectively a bonus for the rest of our travels.
Our two-year membership paid for itself on our first stay.
As we add more family-rated stays, we’ll mark the G’day Parks we’ve personally stayed at so we can see how much use we’re getting out of the membership over the course of our lap.
