What Can I Catch?

Mullet are the reliable South Australian everyday fish — found in bays, estuaries, beaches and rivers throughout the state. They school in shallow water, are easy to catch on light gear with fresh baits, and make a great first fish for kids, especially yellow-eye mullet that run up SA estuaries in numbers.

Best: Summer - Autumn

Best: Autumn - Winter

Black Bream are the classic South Australian estuary fish, holding in tannin-stained rivers, creeks and tidal channels around snags and deep holes. They are wary, fight hard for their size on light gear, and reward lure anglers and bait fishers alike with sweet white fillets.

Best: Spring - Autumn
How to Fish Here — Rigs
A heavy-duty paternoster built for the surf — a star or grapnel sinker holds the bottom in the wash while one or two baits sit up off the sand in the gutter. The standard rig for salmon, mulloway and gummy sharks off South Australian beaches.
The simplest and most natural presentation rig in fishing — a sinker that slides freely on the line so a fish can pick up the bait without feeling any weight. Perfect for finicky biters like whiting, bream and mullet.
