Yellowfin Whiting
Silver Whiting, Bay Whiting
Sillago schomburgkii

Overview
Yellowfin Whiting are a great summer target across South Australia's shallow bays, mudflats and estuary mouths. They school over warm shallow sand, are caught on light gear with fresh bait, and their sweet white flesh and confident little bites make them a family favourite.
Quick Info
Identification
A slender, silvery-beige whiting with striking golden-yellow fins — pectoral, dorsal and tail fins all glow yellow, especially in breeding fish. Slimmer and smaller than King George Whiting.
Bright yellow fins on a slim silvery body, no brown spots (unlike King George Whiting), and a pointed snout. Sizes and limits differ between whiting species, so identification matters.
King George Whiting (round brown spots, deeper body) and School Whiting (smaller, no yellow fins) — Yellowfin Whiting is the only SA whiting with bright yellow fins.

When to Fish
How to Catch Them
Fish light gear with fresh bait — pipi, prawn or worm — on a small running sinker or light paternoster over shallow sand. Cast to visible tailing fish or sand gaps, keep the line tight and let the taps build before lifting.
Small, fresh baits threaded on tiny hooks; in clear shallows a lightly weighted bait drifting naturally ahead of a feeding school outfishes everything.
Rapid taps that build to steady weight — whiting mouths are soft, so feed a moment then lift smoothly.
A smooth firm lift once the rod tip loads — small hooks set themselves in soft mouths without a big strike.
Walk the shallow flats on a run-in tide in summer, watching for tailing fish. Fresh bait and small hooks are all you need — yellowfin whiting bite confidently on light gear.
Wading too fast and spooking schools, hooks that are too large, and confusing them with undersize King George Whiting — check your species and the current size rules.

Rigs & Gear
The simplest and most natural presentation rig in fishing — a sinker that slides freely on the line so a fish can pick up the bait without feeling any weight. Perfect for finicky biters like whiting, bream and mullet.
A versatile and highly effective rig for King George Whiting and many other species.

Method: Total length
Measured at: Measured from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail.
Always check current regulations before fishing. Fishing rules and closures can change.
Keeping Your Catch
Support under the belly with wet hands; whiting are delicate — handle minimal and release undersize fish quickly.
Dispatch quickly and bleed behind the gills before icing for the best table quality.
Slush ice as soon as possible — whiting flesh stays firm and sweet when chilled fast.
Cleaning & Filleting
Scale and gut soon after capture; whiting scale easily under running water.
Fillets are small — run the knife behind the head and along the backbone; they fillet out cleanly with practice.
Skin crisps up well when pan-fried and helps hold the small fillets together.
Very few pin bones; remove any you feel with pliers before cooking.
Cooking
Dust in seasoned flour and pan-fry in butter, or crumb and deep-fry — yellowfin whiting flesh is sweet, white and delicate.
